Rick Perry clarifies his previous comments comparing homosexuality to alcoholism, and “steps in it” again. In a meeting in California last week, Perry was asked if it is his belief that homosexuality is a disorder. The reporters in this Funny or Die video ask the questions we wish the California press had put to Perry in response to his answer.
Perry said at the time that if he had the “genetic coding” to be an alcoholic, he still has the choice not to drink. “I look at the homosexual issue as the same way.” In Rick Perry’s world, being homosexual is just like alcoholism, drug addiction, smoking, or a love of chocolate….You just have to make up your mind to evade those bad habits. If it gets too troublesome, there is always counseling and rehab. I understand that Marcus Bachmann specializes in just such a program!
Answering the Funny or Die reporters, who ask all of the right questions, ‘Rick Perry’ hilariously tries to set the issue ‘straight.’ For instance, it homosexuality is like drinking, is it something one might only indulge in at parties?
Is it possible to be a ‘social gay?’ Is it something one might do at concerts? Perhaps it could make for an afternoon pick-me-up, but certainly not a lifestyle.
In real life, Perry has been attempting to explain the gaffe away – perhaps making matters worse! The potential presidential candidate in 2016 recently gave this explanation. “I got asked about issues, and instead of saying, ‘You know what, we need to be a really respectful and tolerant country to everybody,’ and get back to talking about, whether you’re gay or straight, you need to be having a job,” he said. “I readily admit I stepped right in it.” In other words, he shouldn’t have revealed his true views on homosexuality and kept to the script. The incident brings to mind an excuse he gave in the aftermath of the November 2011 presidential debate. Perry famously forgot the third of three federal agencies he had pledged to dissolve.
“I’m glad I had my boots on tonight,” Perry said at the time. “I stepped in it out there.” It has been suggested that Rick Perry ‘lives in it.’
