John Oliver examines why Donald Trump chose to withdraw the United States from the Paris agreement on climate change, and observes the repercussions felt ’round the world. The decision immediately pissed off our allies and enemies alike, all of whom prefer to continue living on the planet, and it even ticked off the Pope for good measure.
When Trump is presented with something to sign from ‘foreigners’ it translates to a shake-down in his paranoia -filled pea brain. Why else would the participants be cheering? You certainly don’t expect him to read about it! John sorts out the paranoid delusion and ignorance that led to this disastrous decision. Trump isn’t alone in his clueless paradise. There are elected representatives who dismiss climate change. One opines – ‘we move closer to the sun every year, and what with the warm bodies and all, of course it’s getting warmer!’ Another claims it’s ‘hubris to think we mere mortals can impact the climate.’ My hat’s off to you educators. It is a challenging time to be a science teacher.
Oliver suggests that we need a new icon to rally ’round. The polar bear on an ice floe is sad but losing its appeal. The Indian shedding a tear and the sweating globe need to be replaced. We need something that reminds us of the urgency of ignoring our descent into irreversible damage – a point which we can reach in 20 years! What do you think about the image of a 6’2″ Orange Gasbag?
