I had the opportunity to spend a few winters with a backpack traveling out of country. Now in my waning years I look back to those experiences as the most memorable of my life. Alone in the outside world doing well. Which verifies the theme of one of my favorite books ON THE ROAD. My advice to one and all is to spend your time and money on experiences rather than stuff. I can’t think of any stuff that I have fond reflections for. Well besides my college days VW Bus with the bed on the inside and the peace sign on the outside. And the paisley curtains!
What I learned in short order from my travels was – as your backpack is with you at all times – that putting red maple leaf decals all over it makes for much better acceptance with the regular people of the countries one travels in. Let me tell you. I also found Canadians and Australians were the most fun to team up with in my travels. We have language and beer in common.
