Sure, it’s easy to tweet something nasty and irrelevant, when you assume that a celebrity isn’t going to read it – and it’s even easier when you don’t put a face to your nasty tweet! How much more difficult then, is it to imagine the target of your mean tweet reading it on Jimmy Kimmel. Now don’t you feel badly?
Some tweeters seem hung up on scatological references. Ray Romano got one such tweet. Another tweeter found it important to convey that Kid Rock would ‘smell like stale farts and cigarettes. Jessica Alba received a personal insult, as did many others who showed a vulnerable side when they read mean tweets about themselves. Russel Brand, Zach Braff, Kate Mara, Brad Paisley, Kelly Ripa Andy Samberg No Doubt (all of them), Elizabeth Moss and Jessica Simpson all took the time to let viewers know that there are real people with real feelings behind those tweets. Will the number of mean tweets decrease now that people are shamed by having them read by the victims? I thought not either.
