“Between 100,000 and 300,000 barrels a day of Iraq’s declared oil production over the past four years is unaccounted for and could have been siphoned off through corruption or smuggling, according to a draft American government report.” — NY Times
That explains why Dick Cheney’s prediction that Iraqi oil would foot the bill for the whole war has not come to fruition. And the rest of us dummies thought he was being some sort of Pollyanna regarding the realities in Iraq.
The Times went on to say the value of the missing oil would be from five to 15 million dollars a day. My cheap calculator couldn’t go high enough when I asked it to multiply that times 365, and then by a conservative 4, for the four-plus years we’ve been drowning in this folly. My guess is it’s so far cost us a little shy of 15 billion. Imagine what the victims of Katrina, the Kansas tornadoes, the Missouri floods, or even a few homeless veterans could do with that kinda jack.
I’ll bet the situation would be a lot worse if we did not have Halliburton-subcontracted security firms on the scene. I’m sure they are the little Dutch boys plugging the corruption and smuggling hole in the punctured oil production dike. Yeah, right.
And congress and Bush are wrangling over the proper way to fund the war. They should talk to Dick.
