In his ‘For the Record’ segment- Larry Wilmore voices the feelings of many when he says it’s time to lower the Confederate flag – forever. South Carolina’s Governor made impressive noises about lowering the flag, but now it is sounding more like a pipe dream, as she lists all of the obstacles in her way.
For those who argue that the flag is a symbol of their heritage and of tradition, Larry points out that nostalgia will never trump the feelings of those who know it to be a symbol of hatred and oppression. It speaks volumes when skinheads, when not allowed to display a swastika, will substitute with a Confederate flag.
It is just an ugly cloth relic, especially when you consider what it stood for. In the 1851 Cornerstone Speech, the Vice President of the Confederacy said in part, “It’s the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man.”
Imagine viewing a reminder of that over the begonias every day!
