Women and the Draft – Seth Meyers

Women and the Draft: A Closer Look - Seth Meyers

Seth Meyers takes a closer look at the proposed Draft America’s Daughters Act, which may have been a way of making a sarcastic point for Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter, but Hunter’s unthinkable proposal has found great support among other Republicans who believe drafting women is an excellent step toward equality.  They may quietly believe  it’s an excellent way of staffing inevitable future wars, but equality sounds so much more progressive.

“The draft is there to get more people to rip the enemies throats out, and kill them for our nation.” Having painted that gory picture Hunter presented the Draft America’s Daughter’s Act – with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. He never dreamed they would love it!

Perhaps Hunter meant the ‘Draft Our Daughters Act’ to sound somewhat paternalistic, and unintentionally demeaning? Alternate titles suggested by Seth include ‘Uncle Sam Wants You, Sweet cheeks,’ “Little Miss Gunfire Act” or maybe “Wanna Hold My Gun, Toots?”

It’s a shame that Hunter’s objection to the draft has been sidelined as an equality issue. The military has taken steps to place women in  jobs traditionally held by men.  As you can see by Congressman Tammy Duckworth’s great spirit, nothing would have kept her from serving and making a tremendous sacrifice.  Like the Congressman, I feel that there should be no barriers before those who wish to serve; but there should be no law forcing those who aren’t suited to serve – male or female.
